Professor Melville teaches Persian language and literature and Medieval Middle Eastern history. His particular interests include the history and historiography of Mongol and Safavid Iran, on which he has published several articles and, most recently, edited Safavid Persia(1996). He has also worked on natural hazards in the Middle East, and has written two books on the subject: A History of Persian earthquakes (1982) and The Seismicity of Egypt, Arabia and the Red Sea: a historical review (1994).
